Air to Air Heat Exchangers

What do they do?:

Air to Air Plate Heat Exchangers, or Air Plates as they are also known, are an extremely effective and low-cost way of reducing the heating or cooling loads on the treatment of process air and air conditioning systems.

A reduced heating or cooling load means lower energy bills and carbon emissions.

Air Plates use the exhaust air to pre-heat or pre-cool the incoming supply air, without the two air streams ever mixing. The box-like construction of the heat exchanger is suitable to be slid into an enclosure.

As an option, we can supply heat exchangers fitted in our enclosures as complete heat recovery units

Features:

  • Very efficient plate designs and materials - Cross flow or Counter flow available
  • No moving parts
  • Max operating temperature of 250°C
  • Up to 90% Efficiency depending on operating conditions
  • Huge range of models and sizes available

Applications:

  • Heat Recovery
  • Air Handling Units
  • De-humidification of air streams
  • Electrical equipment cooling
  • Drying rooms / kilns heat recycle

Plate Types:

  • Corrugated plate surface types, for high efficiency and energy recovery.
  • Smooth surface plate types that can be easily cleaned for dirty air streams.
  • Cross-flow models for good efficiency (typical 50-75%) with low pressure drops.
  • Counter-flow models for high efficiency (typical 75-90%).

Materials:

  • Aluminium with non-silicone adhesive - max 90°c.
  • Aluminium with silicone adhesive - max 200°c.
  • Epoxy coated aluminium (corrosion resistance for salts / chlorine) - max 200°c.
  • Stainless steel with silicone adhesive - max 250°c.

Plate Type Air Heat Exchangers

Plate Type Air Heat Exchangers

What do they do?:

Where higher temperatures or pressures are required - such as industrial process applications, air plates and rotating wheels would not be suitable.

UK Exchangers Ltd therefore can manufacture bespoke heat exchangers, utilising fully welded stainless steel tubes with optional fins.

Features:

  • Very robust industrial design - fully welded - 100% air tight
  • No moving parts
  • Max operating temperature of 800°C
  • Suitable for high pressures where required
  • Suitable for dusty / high particulate environments
  • Designs incorporate internal thermal expansion

Applications:

  • Heat Recovery
  • Oven Heat Recovery
  • Boiler Flue Economisers
  • Combustion Air Pre-heating
  • Catalytic Oxidisers
  • Process air cooling
  • Indirect process air heaters
  • Thermal oxidisers
  • Spray Dryers
  • Gas Cooling / Condensing

Materials:

  • Tubes : Steel, Stainless steel or Duplex alloy
  • Fins : Aluminium, Epoxy coated aluminium, Steel or Stainless steel

Wheel Type Air Heat Exchangers

What do they do?:

Thermal Wheels are installed across hot and cold air ducts. As the Thermal Wheel rotates, the extended surface is heated by the hot air stream. When the rotation passes through the cold air duct, the wheel cools down, thereby transferring heat.

Features:

  • Higher efficiency than air plates for the amount of space they take up
  • Particularly good for very large air flows - Due to low pressure drop and size
  • Max operating temperature of 60°C
  • Up to 90% Efficiency depending on operating conditions
  • Variable speed motors available for accurate control
  • Diameter 500 mm to 3800 mm
  • Air flows up to 120,000 m³/hr

Applications:

  • Heat recovery
  • Air Handling Units
  • De-humidification of air streams

Rotor Materials:

  • Aluminium
  • Epoxy coated aluminium
  • Aluminium with Hygroscopic surface
